I think for under $100, this is a good value option for a hall-effect keyboard. If it was any more expensive than that, I would quickly lower the rating because there are some drawbacks that I'll mention. But this is the price point that I would recommend to my friends who are getting into HE keyboards for the first time (in the experimental phase).
One main issue that I will mention is that there is some double-clicking (only when using rapid fire) that happens with my spacebar and potentially other keys, but primarily with the space bar. This is a "quality" issue for me and something to consider when getting cheaper HE boards like this, but it can be worked around, especially for a first HE board. I'll explain this detail at the end.
Physical build of keyboard:
- Keyboard layout is perfect. It has all of the keys I'm looking for in a TKL keyboard (still has arrow keys, right control, Del/Home/End/PgUp/PgDn, etc.)
- USB port is in an awkward spot on the keyboard (the right side). The USB port should always be on the left side of a keyboard, furthest away from the mouse. This is a small detail though.
- Keycaps and switches are decent and satisfying, though definitely not end game type of thing. I would eventually want to upgrade to a better set if I was staying on HE keyboards.
- RGB is nice and bright, but the keycaps are not shine-through, which is a big miss IMO. Makes it hard to read the keys in a dark room at night. It's fine if you have lamps, but again, this is not "end game" material IMO. It's just fine for the price point.
- Keyboard looks good and has a good color scheme
Software:
- They have a web driver, which is much nicer than a driver you have to download. The downside is you need to use a Chromium browser for the web driver, but I'm sure most people do that anyway.
- The website is functional and decent, but definitely a step below the big companies that make HE keyboards. Still, it works and gets the job done.
- You can calibrate specific keys, set various travel distances for specific keys (e.g. have some keys be very sensitive and others less sensitive).
- You can disable/enable rapid trigger on specific keys
- You can use between 0.1mm - 3.5mm for the levels. I wish this went up to 4mm, but 3.5mm is fine.
Double-click issue:
- I have an issue with my board where if I use rapid trigger on a key, there is a chance that pressing it one time would result in two clicks being registered. This is obviously a major problem, so you need to adjust your actuation points to work around this. I was able to work around it, but this is a downside because it means you can't have your keys be as sensitive as you would like them to be. If you want to use 0.2mm actuation points, you may be forced to endure double clicks.
- For me, it was the spacebar. I would get double clicks with any actuation point below 1.0mm. I then re-calibrated the spacebar using the web driver and was able to reduce the actuation point to 0.5mm and still avoid the double clicks, so that was better. But I still cannot do 0.2mm-0.4mm actuation point on the spacebar due to the double clicks.
Summary: The software and a few build quality issues are going to be the shortcoming with this board. That's the trade-off for the price, but I still think this is a really good value board for the price, and I think it's a good introduction into HE if on a budget.
